Please Help

Ok…I don’t know where to turn now. I have a 1998 Escort ZX2. It has the 2 litre DOHC 16V Zetech engine. Is this a non interference or a interference engine? My timing belt is shot and Ive gotten prices from 300.00 up to 2000.00. Some say just a new timing belt and pulleys and another says I probably have big engine problems. The difference being in what type of engine I have. I’ve asked all over the net, ford mechanics and others. I’m at wits end. Can someone please give me a straight answer on this? Please Please

Only thing I’ve ever heard from people experienced with this engine was the the 2.0 Zetec was NON interference - unless the head was shaved beyond a certain point.

Belt and pulleys should be all you need to get back on the road.

it’s non interference. reset the cams, position the crank right, swap pulleys, add new belt, and button it up

Thank you so much for your answers…I really appreciate it.

as everyone else said it is a non interference engine, when the timing belt goes on our cars luckly it has no effect of damaging the head or valves which saves you a ton of $$$ many shops think that its a interference engine bc thats what it says in some of the computers so make sure if you have a mechanic do it for you they know this or you can do it yourself using this link as a ‘how to’ viewtopic.php?f=70&t=2027 goodluck

Heh…I tease the Honda boys all the time on this. I usually taunt them with “Hey guys, let’s go run 'em till the T-belt breaks!” lol
